Container Shipping Forecasted for Third Highest Profit Year in 2024, Says Alphaliner!

The container shipping sector is set to achieve its third most lucrative year on record in 2024, despite facing heightened costs due to geopolitical conflicts and regulatory shifts, as reported by Alphaliner. Leading shipping companies have shown remarkable financial strength, overcoming significant challenges posed by global tensions and rising operational expenses. According to Alphaliner’s data, the net profits of major carriers have already exceeded the total earnings recorded in both 2020 and 2023, positioning 2024 as a standout year for profitability.

The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have prompted essential changes to shipping routes, forcing companies to reroute vessels around the Cape of Good Hope. This strategic shift has resulted in a nearly 20% increase in ton-miles year-on-year, thereby raising costs across various operational sectors. A noteworthy example is Maersk, the Danish shipping powerhouse, which has reported a 23% rise in bunker fuel expenses, a direct consequence of these rerouted paths. Alphaliner’s figures indicate that Maersk consumed 8.5 million tonnes of fuel in the first three quarters of 2024, marking a 16% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2023.

Furthermore, the implementation of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) on January 1 has added another layer of financial burden. For example, Maersk has earmarked nearly $130 million for carbon offsets in 2024, a cost that was not part of last year’s budget.

Despite these escalating expenses, the shipping industry continues to demonstrate impressive resilience. Alphaliner’s analysis posits that 2024 will be a showcase of the sector’s ability to adapt, making it the third most profitable year in liner shipping history, surpassed only by the exceptional years of 2021 and 2022. As global trade navigates through these challenging times, the tenacity of container carriers paints a compelling picture of strategic resilience and financial success.
