Love’s Expands Alternative Energy Portfolio with Acquisition of 44 CNG Stations

Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores has made a significant move to bolster its sustainability efforts by acquiring U.S. Energy’s extensive compressed natural gas (CNG) network. Announced on April 25, the deal includes 41 public and private stations across 15 U.S. states and three in Canada, growing Love’s CNG station network by 70% to a total of 107 locations. The acquisition coincides with the rebranding of Love’s alternative energy division from Trillium Energy Solutions to Love’s Alternative Energy on April 28, marking a strategic evolution in the company’s renewable energy initiatives.
This expansion underscores Love’s commitment to providing cleaner, more sustainable energy options amid a broader industry shift toward renewable fuels. The global CNG market was valued at nearly $4 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow approximately 5% annually, driven by increasing demand for environmentally friendly transportation solutions. Ryan Erickson, Vice President of Alternative Energy at Love’s, emphasized the importance of this growth: “We’ve seen increased interest in CNG as a clean alternative fuel from both our private sector fleet and trucking customers. Growing our network opens up more value and access for them.”
In addition to the acquisition, Love’s plans to open a new public CNG station in Fresno, California, later this year. The company’s broader alternative energy portfolio also includes six hydrogen stations either operational or under construction, along with recently launched next-generation electric vehicle chargers at stores in New York State and Pennsylvania.
Founded in 2016 through the acquisition of Trillium, Love’s sees this expansion as a natural progression of its legacy—aimed at offering innovative, eco-friendly energy solutions that meet the evolving needs of its customers and support the industry’s transition to sustainable transportation.
“This expansion reflects Love’s commitment to providing sustainable energy solutions and supporting the industry’s shift toward cleaner fuels,” Erickson said. “We’re dedicated to meeting our customers’ evolving needs with innovative, eco-friendly options.”
