Maersk’s OneWireless: The Future of Connected Shipping Begins Fleet-Wide Deployment

By Ken Miller, Editor & Senior Journalist

A.P. Moller – Maersk has completed the deployment of its next-generation IoT connectivity platform, OneWireless, across 450 vessels in its fleet. This extensive rollout includes all Maersk-owned ships and more than 100 time-chartered vessels, marking a significant advancement in digital shipping technology. The primary goal is to meet the increasing demand for real-time data transmission and to provide enhanced IoT capabilities that boost operational efficiency and supply chain transparency.

The deployment process has already started and is expected to be fully completed by the first quarter of 2026. Because the upgrade involves hardware replacements onboard each vessel, Maersk emphasizes the importance of meticulous planning, executing installations during scheduled port calls to ensure minimal disruption.

“With our next-generation connectivity platform, we will be able to offer our customers notable benefits, including real-time cargo tracking, enhanced supply chain visibility, and improved operational efficiency,” said Kjeld Dittmann, Maersk’s Head of Vessel & Cargo Connectivity. He explained that the platform is designed to support thousands of IoT devices, ensuring optimal performance for reefer (temperature-sensitive cargo) monitoring and fleet management.

Currently, Maersk’s Captain Peter solution allows customers to monitor reefer cargo temperatures; however, the existing 2G onboard networks limit the frequency and detail of data updates. The shift to 4G technology with OneWireless will significantly increase data speed and granularity, enabling smarter cargo tracking and providing operational insights that were previously impossible.

“This upgrade to our IoT infrastructure is comparable to the shift consumers experienced when moving from 2G to 4G mobile networks,” Dittmann stated. “Just as that transition brought faster speeds, better connectivity, and new possibilities, the OneWireless platform revolutionizes how we communicate with cargo at sea.”

With real-time data sharing at unprecedented speeds and reliability, Maersk aims to unlock new levels of operational excellence, driving efficiency and innovation in a connected, data-driven shipping industry.

The platform supports multiple wireless technologies, including NB-IoT, Cat-M, and LTE broadband, offering scalability, security, and flexibility. It enables seamless integration of IoT devices and services across private and public networks, supporting Bring Your Own IoT (BYOIoT) solutions based on open standards.

Developed in collaboration with leading tech partners such as Onomondo, Nokia, 42com Sat, Complea, and Zededa, the platform combines advanced components designed for performance and reliability, setting a new standard in maritime connectivity.
