Port of Long Beach Launches $57.4 Million Incentive Programs for Emissions Reductions
The Port of Long Beach (POLB) has announced the introduction of two new incentive programs totaling $57.4 million aimed at accelerating emissions reductions. These initiatives will support the purchase of zero-emissions cargo-handling equipment and cleaner harbor craft.
The funding is part of the System-Wide Investment in Freight Transport (SWIFT), an initiative backed by the California State Transportation Agency’s Port and Freight Infrastructure Program. SWIFT is designed to modernize California’s ports, enhance the efficiency of goods movement, and mitigate environmental impacts on surrounding communities.
“This program is all about making strides in operational efficiency and sustainability, rapidly and responsibly,” said POLB CEO Mario Cordero. “It reflects not only our dedication to innovation but also our commitment to the community and the environment.”
The funding is evenly divided between two key programs:
Zero-Emission Terminal Transformation Program**: This program allocates $28.7 million in incentives for the purchase of zero-emission cargo handling equipment, as well as battery-electric charging equipment for such machinery. All cargo handling equipment being tested must be manually operated.
Commercial Harbor Craft Incentive Program**: This initiative also receives $28.7 million to support upgrades that allow harbor craft to meet advanced environmental standards.
These programs underscore the POLB’s commitment to fostering a sustainable future and improving air quality in the region while enhancing operational capabilities.
