Spain’s Ports Record Slight Increase in Container Volumes During Q1 2025

By Ken Miller, Editor & Senior Journalist

In the first quarter of 2025, Spanish ports collectively handled approximately 4.32 million TEUs, reflecting a modest growth of 1% compared to the same period last year, according to recent industry data. Despite this overall stability, individual port performances varied considerably.

Algeciras, Spain’s largest port, experienced an 11% decline in throughput, indicating a challenging start to the year. Barcelona, the second-busiest port, also saw a slight decrease of 2%. In contrast, Valencia was the only port among the top three to report positive growth, increasing cargo volumes by 3%.

Malaga stood out as the top performer, more than quadrupling its throughput after suffering significant losses in 2024. However, its volumes are still below the levels recorded in 2023. Meanwhile, Bilbao experienced a 10% year-on-year decline, with the port reporting 102,000 TEUs during the quarter.

Overall, Spanish ports maintained relatively stable container volumes during the first three months of 2025, although regional disparities highlight the varying impacts of global trade dynamics and local economic factors.
