Strong Start for Port of New York and New Jersey in 2025

The Port of New York and New Jersey kicked off 2025 with impressive growth in total volume and imports. In January, the port handled 720,747 TEUs, marking an 8% increase compared to the same month last year. Import volumes surged by 10.5%, totaling 378,632 TEUs, while exports saw a 5.7% decrease, reaching 98,706 TEUs.

In terms of empty containers, export empties rose by 11%, totaling 241,751 TEUs, while import empties declined by 15.1%. However, the port experienced a slight 1% drop in rail volume from January 2024, totaling 52,487 containers. Additionally, the movement of autos through the port decreased by 14.5%, with 23,241 units recorded in January.

Overall, while the port faced challenges in certain areas, the strong growth in imports and export empties signals a positive outlook for the year ahead.
