UPS Considering Humanoid Robots for Delivery Tasks

By Ken Miller, Editor & Senior Journalist

United Parcel Service (UPS) is reportedly in early-stage talks with robotics startup Figure AI, aiming to integrate humanoid robots into parts of its logistics operations. The details of these discussions remain confidential, but sources indicate that the conversations began last year and have continued into recent months.

While the specific roles that Figure’s robots might play for UPS are still under wraps, the startup has showcased its technology publicly. In February, Figure released a short video showing a humanoid robot—standing about five and a half feet tall—working alongside a conveyor system, sorting small parcels. This suggests potential applications in parcel handling and sorting within UPS’s extensive network.

The field of robotics and AI is rapidly evolving, with many startups and tech giants developing machines that mimic human movements and appearance. Figure has positioned itself as a prominent player in this space, reportedly seeking to raise $1.5 billion at a valuation of nearly $40 billion, according to Bloomberg.

However, some skepticism has emerged about the company’s claims, particularly regarding its reported collaboration with BMW. There are questions about whether Figure may have overstated the extent of its partnership or its work with the automaker.

UPS has been cautious in its response, stating that it does not comment on “specific or potential vendor relationships,” but reaffirmed that it is constantly exploring new technologies, including robotics, to enhance its operations. Meanwhile, a representative for Figure declined to comment.

The logistics giant has been investing heavily in automation over recent years, deploying robotic arms and AI-based software in its Velocity facilities. Additionally, UPS has partnered with startups like Dexterity, which develops robots capable of performing tasks with “human-like” finesse, reflecting the company’s ongoing efforts to innovate and automate within the industry.
