USPS Eyes FedEx Board Member David Steiner for Postmaster General Amid Privatization Concerns

By Ken Miller, Editor & Senior Journalist

The U.S. Postal Service is considering FedEx board member David Steiner as its next Postmaster General, following the sudden departure of Louis DeJoy. The USPS board of governors has conditionally extended an offer to Steiner, who must be approved through a formal vote before taking the role.

Critics argue that appointing Steiner, a FedEx executive and former Waste Management CEO, signals a push toward privatizing the USPS. Many see it as a conflict of interest and part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to weaken or privatize the agency. Trump has previously discussed plans to bring USPS under direct presidential control and has expressed support for privatization.

The appointment comes amid concerns that such moves threaten thousands of jobs and the USPS’s mission of serving all Americans, especially in rural areas. The USPS board, composed of appointees from both parties, is responsible for selecting the Postmaster General, but Trump has the power to influence the process by filling vacancies with allies.

Critics warn that this move could accelerate efforts to dismantle the public mail system and transfer its functions to private carriers.
